One of the most basic questions of “what do you do” has become the most difficult thing I can everanswer to these days. This is not because I am not doing anything, but because I do so much I don’t even know where to start.

I am an entrepreneur / branding strategist / author and advocate for women in leadership. Probably more aptly named – a slashie.

A slashie – we are a generation of people who are not defined by a singular job title but manage a portfolio of career and aspirations simultaneously. Like a growing number of my Gen Y and Millennial peers, we are holding down more than one job not because we have to, but because we want to.

We are ditching the 9-5 not because we lack discipline and commitment, but because our ambition and drive urges us to seek even more challenges. We are foregoing the traditional stable career paths once deemed desirable not because we want to be different for the sake of it, but because we are determined to forge our own paths and dictate our own career. We want to do more with our life and have more freedom to create a career and life that is reflective of not only our expertise, but also passion and purpose.

This generation of slashies forms a key part of the C21 Talent.

Contrary to the common perception that people slash by necessity, Generation slashie actually slash by choice.

Job for life has lost its place as a symbol of security. Like some people who are diversifying their investment portfolio, Generation Slashie are diversifying their career portfolio and it can look like a combination of many things -
Income Generation vs Passion Project  (ie. Banker by day / Screen Writer by night)
Mind vs Body (Business Analyst during the week / Yoga Instructor on the weekend)
Left Brain vs Right Brain (Medical Researcher day to day / Sculptor over the holidays)

Unlike GenX, GenY, Generation slashie is defined not by their age but by their desire and choice to create a portfolio career. The desire is Cross Generational and Cross Gender
They are looking for new types of work that enables them to
- utilize all their skills
- tap into all their values
- allow them to lead the lifestyle they desire

The important thing to note is that they are not asking for permission, but asking for ways to do so and that is why flexibility has become an absolute necessity.80% of millennial says flexibility is one of their top considerations when choosing an employer across UK, Australia and New Zealand. When it comes to Generation slashie, flexibility and ambition goes hand in hand.

We are a generation that is educated, confident and hungry to get ahead in life. Armed with rapidly advancing technology like never before, we are putting in more hard work, juggling more responsibilities and sometimes enjoying less sleep but happily reaping the rewards of being more fulfilled, productive and purposeful in life. We are equipped with multidisciplinary skills from our corporate job and entrepreneurial pursuit that will see us succeeding in the 21st century.

The cross-fertilization of skills makes us incredibly useful and resourceful in today’s competitive and ever evolving world of business. Employers are looking for top talents that can bring cut through, entrepreneurial and innovative mindset to progress their business forward and stay ahead of the curve. Investors are looking for entrepreneurs with corporate maturity who have brilliant ideas, as well as the discipline and experience to execute and deliver commercial results.

The days when there is a straightforward answer to “what do you do” is quickly slipping through our fingers. Time to ask yourself, would you be part of the new wave that is reshaping our workforce? Would you have what it takes to remain employable by 2020?
